Lakshadweep is a tropical archipelago of 36 atolls and coral reefs in the Laccadive Sea, off the coast of Kerala, India. Not all of the islands are inhabited, and only a few are open to visitors (permits required). Kavaratti, one of the more developed islands, is home to dozens of mosques, including the ornately decorated Ujra Mosque, as well as Kavaratti Aquarium, showcasing regional fish, shark and coral species.

By Air
Although this is one of the fastest ways to reach Lakshadweep, there are no direct flights to the islands. The nearest airport is Cochin International Airport which receives flights from several cities in India and even abroad. Lakshadweep has just one airport which is in Agatti island. From Cochin, there are Air India flights that reach Agatti in one and a half hours and these operate six days a week. From Agatti, if you want to travel to Kavaratti island, there are helicopter services which run throughout the year. During monsoon, it’s possible to go to Bangaram from Agatti. If you want to visit Lakshadweep islands, you also need to take a tourism permit from Kochi.
By Ship
This is the most common way to reach Lakshadweep as it is an island and water accessibility is excellent. There are seven passenger ships that take people to Lakshadweep. They are MV Arabian Sea, MV Dweep Setu, MV Kavaratti, MV Bharat Seema, MV Minicoy, MV Lakshadweep Sea and MV Amindivi Sea. The journey on these ships can be quite interesting and fun. There are different classes of accommodation here with a/c Deluxe Class, a/c First Class and Tourist Class.
The ships offer all forms of entertainment such as cafeteria, entertainment lounge, snack bars, walkway etc. Other amenities such as health services and doctors are also available on board. However, it’s best to take this journey if you are not in any big hurry to reach Lakshadweep. This journey takes anywhere between 14 to 20 hours.
For those who like the idea of cruises, there are some which come from Mumbai, Chennai, Vishakapatanam and Cochin.
Places To Visit
1. Kadmat
Also known as cardamom island, the Kadmat Island is located on a coral reef and is known for its shallow shores that are rich with marine life. The huge lagoon located towards the west of the island makes it a popular tourist destination.
2. Kavaratti Island
The most developed island in Lakshadweep, Kavaratti also serves as the administrative capital of Lakshadweep. The island is known for its sandy white beaches with crystal blue waters and secluded lagoons. Watersports and swimming can be enjoyed at the beaches and is visited by a huge number of tourists.
3. Kalpeni Island
Uninhabited and secluded, Kalpeni is known for its amazing beaches. One can sunbathe or swim in the waters or enjoy Watersports like snorkeling and scuba diving here. The waters are shallow with white sandy shores and are perfect destination for a visit with friends.
4. Bangaram Atoll
Known for its coral reefs, Bangaram is one of the most visited islands in the Lakshadweep. Bangaram is known to be the only island where consumption of liquor is allowed. It is close to the Agatti aerodrome where regular flights to Kochi can be availed. Bangaram is also famous for its clean and calm beaches.
5. Agatti Island
With a majority of Muslim population, the Island is said to have been visited by Arabian traveler Ibn Batuta. The island unlike the others isn’t easily accessible as one would need to obtain a special permit from the Administration and is granted only with visitors who have a confirmed place to stay.
6. Minicoy Island
Located at the southernmost point of the Lakshadweep islands, Minicoy Islands are often called Malikau by the locals. The island was said to be the ancient capital of Lakshadweep and was named Malikau by the Arabian Traders. The place is famous for its beaches and a lighthouse that was constructed in 1885. The island is also famous for its Maldives influences culture and cuisine.
